Saturday afternoon Operation Occupy Wall Street turned ugly with reports of police brutality and mass arrests. Approximately 60-100 demonstrators were arrested near Union Square in lower Manhattan Saturday when a large contingent of NYPD swarmed peacefully marching protestors.
Numerous reports are surfacing of instances of excessive force used by police in making arrests and controlling the crowd Saturday. In particular, apparently as part of the police action, numerous peaceful female protestors were corralled and penned behind an orange mesh barricade before being maced by police officers. A video of the disturbing and ugly episode has gone viral.

Last weekend a coalition of activists came together for Operation Occupy Wall Street, an ongoing nonviolent demonstration opposing corporate influence over U.S. politics. Inspired by the Arab Spring, the aim of the demonstration is to begin a sustained occupation of Wall Street and the financial district of New York City.
The Operation was originally suggested by Adbusters, a not-for-profit, anti-consumerist organization. However, the protest really began to gather steam when the notorious international Internet hacktivist collective known as Anonymous joined the operation. Ron Paul supporters, supporters of Bradley Manning, members of the Socialist Party, self-described anarchists, and Lyndon LaRouche supporters are all being represented in the on-going demonstrations
Despite what many claim to be a virtual media blackout, the protest is moving into its second week. The well organized and disciplined protestors have been camped out at Zuccotti Park, since renamed Liberty Square by activists.
Previously arrests had been few, although some members of Anonymous, wearing Guy Fawkes masks, were arrested. The police were enforcing an 1845 law that prohibits two or three people wearing masks to stand together in public.
At time of post, Operation Occupy Wall Street General Assembly had decided half of the Liberty Plaza protesters would remain in camp, while the other half of the protesters would march to One Police Plaza to demand information and medical care for those arrested.
