The latest developments—a new conspiracy theory, a call-girl sub-scandal—haven’t really changed that. On the upside, it did bring Christine Lagarde to power.

Nicolas Sarkozy’s “Karachi Affair.” Though Sarko has called the “grotesque” allegations nothing but a “fairy tale,” he is widely suspected of involvement in a scheme to profit from the sale of submarines to Pakistan in the mid-nineties. (Philip Gourevitch has more details.) Both Sarkozy’s former deputy chief of staff and the best man at his wedding to Carla Bruni have already been taken into custody, though as long as he is in office Sarkozy himself is protected by presidential immunity.
