Every year Edinburgh transforms itself into the world’s largest stage for performing arts. Take a stroll down the Royal Mile and you’ll be swamped by performers from all over the world telling jokes, singing, dancing and doing their best to get you to one of the 40,000 shows on offer. If you’re into performing arts like comedy, theatre, dance and music, then it doesn’t get bigger or better than Fringe.

SoundCloud loves to help content-creators share their talents, so we headed up to Edinburgh to encourage performers, journalists and festival-goers to capture and share sounds of the festival on our interactive map: soundsoffringe.com. A host of comedians and performers are using the map, including Tiernan Douieb, Scott Capurro, Mick Ferry, Matt Green, Stuart Goldsmith, The Gilded Balloon and the British Comedy Guide. Check it out to hear comedy and commentary from the festival.

Sounds Of My City - Katie has embarked on a collaborative exploration of Toronto, capturing the sounds that make her city unique. Take a listen to her city!


Without Walls Project - How do people interact with art in public spaces? Eddie is capturing the sounds around public art installations in New York City and tagging the audio on unique maps using ThingLink.


United Sounds - The UN Declaration of Human Rights is the most translated text in the world at 370 languages and dialects. Alex has challenged herself to create the largest collection of audio recordings of the UDHR.

Democracy Radio
We get a nice fuzzy feeling when we hear people are using SoundCloud for good. Sourcefabric, a not-for-profit on a mission to promote quality independent journalism through open source tools, is doing just that. Their innovative integration of SoundCloud, Newscoop CMS and Airtime radio allows radio stations to create and publish shows to sites and social networks in a quick and inexpensive way. Created for the Dakar-based West Africa Democracy Radio to produce shows in 13 West African countries, the integration has been honored with a distinction in this year’s Knight-Batten Awards. Wow.
