Femme Fatale in Art (Waterhouse)

John William Waterhouse 1849- 1917

Waterhouse was an eclectic painter.
He painted pre- raphaelite pictures in a more modern manner.
Born in Rome, both of his parents were painters.
Waterhouse is often associated with the pre- raphaelites because of his approach to painting and his love of myth and classical history.
Waterhouse's distinctively romantic approach to the femme fatale (la belle dame sans merci, Hylas and the nymps) and the abandoned heroine (Ophelia, Meriamne, the lady of Shallot) appealed greatly to the masses.
Waterhouse's academic and technical skill commanded the respect of both his peers and critics.
The enchanted garden was exhibited posthumously at the academy even though it was never finished.
His influence can be seen in the works of sir Frank Dicksee, Arthur Hacker, and Herbert James Draper
Waterhouse was inspired by Ovidius, Keats, Boccaccio, Shakespeare, Tennyson en Dante.
Waterhouse was one of the final pre-raphaelite artists, being most productive in the latter decades of the 19th century and early decades of the 20th, long afther the era of the pre-raphaelite brotherhood.
Because of this, he has been referred to as "the modern pre-raphaelite", and incorporated techniques borrowed from the French impressionists into his work.
